quick and downy

Yesterday around 3pm we decided that this week would be a good one to spend in Whittier (elementary schools aren’t in session in Olympia), so we hit the road at 9pm last night and drove into Whittier around 5pm today. We’ll probably leave on Friday. Looking forward to seeing some of you while we’re here.

Driving that far is strenuous, and I’ll need some recovery time, but we did enjoy couple of audio books (Thor’s Wedding Day and Number the Stars), and a handful of podcasts from the Speaking of Faith NPR show. Particularly this one on the need for religious language in international diplomacy. Fascinating stuff!

"There is no virtue in compulsory government charity, and there is no virtue in advocating it. A politician who portrays himself as "caring" and "sensitive" because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs is merely saying that he's willing to try to do good with other people's money. Well, who isn't? And a voter who takes pride in supporting such programs is telling us that he'll do good with his own money -- if a gun is held to his head." -- P.J. O'Rourke
